No matter what type of operation you run, the work does not stop because the seasons change. From dairymen milking cows every day, to beef herdsmen feeding their cattle, and even the behind the scenes meticulous work of grain operations, the men and women who work to feed America do whatever it takes, to keep their operation running efficiently throughout all seasons.
While this season of the year may look different depending on the operation, it can also look different depending on the generation. Often times the older generation on the farm may take a well-deserved extended stay in a warmer location. During this time, the next generation in line keeps the operation running from the home farm, knowing one day they will get their turn at taking that extended warm weather stay.
The Beauty of the Season
It can be easy to find the negatives of the winter months, both on and off the farm; however, it is important to highlight what these months can be used for. Typically, this time of year everything seems to run and move just a tad bit slower. The initial reaction of many is often times frustration and a push to move faster. Instead of getting frustrated and pushing, taking the time to slow down can be good for both the mind and body.
The holiday season also falls during these winter months and is a good time for farmers and ranchers to catch up on quality time with their families. From March-November it is typically farm work first, so the little quality time you do get is spent in the seat of a tractor or semi, or maybe even in a milking parlor. This is also a wonderful time to check in with friends and extended family, who may not live just down the road.
Even though the weather brings its own challenges, there is nothing quite like a snow filled farmstead, on a sunny, frosty morning in late January. The scenery provides a beautiful back drop for morning chores, and some may say makes that warm cup of coffee taste even better.
So, while slowing down and enjoying the simple things can often be overlooked, in the fast paced, ever changing environment of a modern day farmer or rancher, here at CSB we encourage you to find the beauty of the winter season, and enjoy the slower moments it brings.
